Scum. That’s what they are.

Unlike his deceased yakuza dad, Keisuke Ninomiya (Yu Yokoyama of pop group Kanjani∞) doesn’t have what it takes to be a mafia man. Instead, he works as a small-fry loanshark for his dad’s best friends, boss-man Shimizu (Jun Kunimura; ChihayafuruThe Wailing) and his angry henchman Kuwahara (Kuranosuke Sasaki; Samurai Hustle, Solomon’s Perjury).

One day, indie producer Koshimizu (Isao Hashizume, What a Wonderful Family!) approaches Ninomiya and offers an associate producer role in exchange for funding. Seeing an opportunity for Ninomiya to go legit, Shimada invests in the film to help his old mate’s son. However, some things are too good to be true, and Koshimizu and his mistress quickly run off with the funds.

Blamed for the predicament, Ninomiya is forced even deeper into Osaka’s seedy underworld as Kuwahara drags him to recover the stolen money. In their pursuit across Japan and abroad, they soon find the fraud runs much deeper, and the slippery Koshimizu has more than a few tricks up his sleeve.

Adapting a Naoki Award-winning novel, Shotaro Kobayashi (Maestro!) offers an engrossing, off-beat glimpse into a world of loyalty and betrayal that rates high on the entertainment scale. Sasaki is perfectly cast as the smooth-talking Kuwahara and Yokoyama is excellent as the hesitant Ninomiya. Expect more witty dialogue rather than slapstick gags, less fist-fighting and more out-thinking.
