This little known film by Kaneto Shindo is a beautifully shot black and white drama depicting the determination of a mother who survived the Hiroshima A-bomb. Tamiko is a divorced mother struggling to care for her eight-year-old son. When he is diagnosed with a brain tumour, Tamiko is forced to marry another single parent, with the condition he pays for the operation.
Shindo’s Mother is masterfully shot and paints a poignant, at times heart-breaking, portrait of the struggling lower class in post-war Japan.
