A dysfunctional family is forced to reunite in this introspective feel-good drama

Screened as part of JFF 2018.

Yoshiko Haruno (Yukino Kishii) is in the middle of making love when she gets a phone call announcing her grandfather’s death. The Haruno family are quick to reunite and start preparing for the funeral before anyone has the chance to shed a tear, but Yoshiko is disturbed by their indifference, as if they’ve been expecting Grandpa to pass away; as well as the fact that she was busy enjoying life while Grandpa was dying. But death is, after all, inevitable. And amidst the circus of her family’s squabbling, she realises that grief eventually comes, it just takes time.

Commercial director Yukihiro Morigaki’s debut narrative feature is a feel-good drama filled with introspective thought and peppered with broad comic strokes. Set in the idyllic Japanese countryside, it takes the familiar dysfunctional family reunion to tell a simple story about the complexities of life, death, and grieving.
