Based on a true story about the importance of friends, laughter, and hope
Yasuaki Shikano (Yo Oizumi; YAKINIKU DRAGON) is a 34 year old man who suffers from muscular dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair. Rather than heeding the advice of his concerned doctor to remain in hospital, Yasuaki chooses a more radical and independent lifestyle in his one bedroom apartment, where he is constantly surrounded by a cohort of volunteer carers who are at his every beck and call. Yasuaki audaciously orders his volunteers around, never giving them a moment’s rest—especially med-school student Hisaki, who is even ordered to go buy Yasuaki a banana in the middle of the night! When beautiful stranger Misaki (Mitsuki Takahata) turns up out of nowhere, Hisaki is smitten, but little does he know that she is Hisaki’s girlfriend. Misaki finds Yasuaki’s eccentric tendencies and overall manner rude and annoying, but gradually realises that he has a unique outlook on life and infects the people he meets with joy and compassion. Based on a true story, Tetsu Maeda’s film depicts the life of a free-spirited man determined to live life to the fullest.
