We are featuring two Takashi Miike films this year – two very well made films that are on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Lion Standing in the Wind is a serious drama featuring some veteran names amongst its cast. Filmed mostly in Kenya, it is based on the real story of a Japanese doctor (Koichiro Shibata) who served as a medical volunteer in the war-torn African country.
AS THE GODS WILL on the other hand is a bloody, fantasy extravaganza led by Japan’s up-and-coming young stars including Fukushi Sota and Ryunosuke Kamiki. In this film, high school students attempt to survive a series of deadly games and riddles, not knowing that the whole country is watching them through a giant cube-slash-screen floating in the middle of Tokyo. Sounds crazy? It is!
These two titles will only screen in Sydney and Melbourne but if you fancy some cult film action why not check out The Ninja War of TORAKAGE? TORAKAGE stars actor Takumi Saito who is a regular in Miike’s films.
