This is a film review and film edit by staff member Pochi—the entirety of JFF may not agree with her opinions but we’re interested to hear what you think of these films! Head to our Facebook page or tag us on all social media with #jff2015au.

As the festival progresses, I keep noticing a trend amongst festival goers this year – and that is the search for films that must absolutely be seen on the big screen. I rounded up the JFF team and we picked out these cinematic delights that are too good to pass up watching in the movie theatre.

little forest -winter/spring-

Set against the backdrop of the picturesque mountain country of Tohoku, this is one movie filled with gorgeous scenery and pretty food shots. A perfect film for those who enjoy sceneries, as well as for the Instagram generation who love food snaps.

Pieta in the Toilet

A stellar indie film packed with feels and subtleties.. Think city lights, roof tops, and open skies.

KAKEKOMI

Under the direction of Masato Harada (Chronicle of My Mother, Kamikaze Taxi) and careful eye of cinematographer Takahide Shibanushi, we are treated to a beautifully shot period film that transports us to the Edo period. Think evergreen and captivating temples.

The Emperor in August

Beautifully shot and nuanced in its portrayal of a tumultuous – but largely unknown – coup d’etat within the military ranks in the lead up to Japan’s surrender in the Second World War.
